George R. R. Martin
George R. R. Martin is an American author most recognized for his A Song of Ice and Fire series and the television adaptation of this series, Game of Thrones. The forth and fifth novels in this series rose to the number one slot on the New York Times bestseller list. George has recieved several high accolades for his work, most notably his inclusion in Time Magazine's 2011 list of the top one-hundred most influential people in the world and their proclaimation of him as "The American Tolkien".
George was born on September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey to a low income working class family. Although he claims that he did not enjoy his time in high school, it was during that time that George developed his passion for comics, science fiction, and fantasy. After high school George went on to get B.S. and M.S. degrees in Journalism from Northwestern University in Everston Illinois. George started outwriting short science fiction stories and eventually worked his way to writing full-length novels and writing for television.
George's most noteworthy works for television include his work with Twilight Zone, his work with Beauty and the Beast, and his current work with Game of Thrones. George continues to display his passion for science fiction and fantasy today by regularly attending science fiction conventions. George recently made an appearance during the summer at ComicCon to lead a discussion panel with the cast of Game of Thrones. George is currently very busy working on Season 2 of Game of Thrones as well as finishing the sixth book of A Song of Ice and Fire, "The Winds of Winter".
